Slackness & Departure

Sorry I have been so slack with updates. I ahve been a little preoccupied with finishing uni and getting ready for my trip.

Uni is now over. I find out my results at some stage while on holidays and will let you know when I can.

My bike is all ready to rock and roll having returned from yet another service to make sure everything is perfect. I have purchased a front rack for it (along with lots of other stuff).

For the next 9 weeks all my blog updates will happen on my NZ blog so there will be nothing new on here (I think).

Have fun.

Exams

Three down, two to go!!!

That's right only two more exams to go.

The recent exams have made me wonder about a few things.

We have these rules saying that you cant take your mobile phone to your desk and yet when the supervisors ask everyone to check their phones people grab them from their pockets and check and put them back! I know this is trivial and they probably dont cheat but it would be nice if they enforced these things.

Non-programmable calculators. Some exams specify that you can bring in a calculator that is not programmable. This might seem like a trivial detail to non-IT students but in an IT exam it makes a HUGE difference. I have seen people in exams with programmable calculators and the supervisors arent informed as to what this requirement means. At the very least the calculator should be reset so that it isnt full of answers. Even then the fact that you can write programs on it and do all sorts of other stuff means it would be an unfair advantage.

Punctuality. It never ceases to amaze me the number of people that arrive late to exams. Enough said.

Tsk tsk tsk.... I have been judged (VERY wrongly) by some of the supervisors in the past for leaving an exam early (like 30mins into a 3hour exam). Even when you are busy doing the exam it is easy to see which students know the answers and are flying through the questions, which are strugling and those that aren't putting in any effort at all. My philosiphy is with most exam questions you know the answer or you don't. Some involve some thinking, some involve a lot of writting, but most of the time it is simply a variation of stuff you have done in class. Just for the record my result on the above mentioned exam was 19/20, only one person beat me on 19.5/20 and there was only one other person (18/20) who scored more than 12.

STRESS. A lot of my class mates freak out before exams. I am not talking during study week I am talking the night before or the morning of the exam. The number of people that stay up all night 'studying' and not eating amazes me. What makes it more amazing is that our exams aren't "regurgitate this fact" it is more along the lines of "using the algorithm X and inputs Y calculate the output" or "explain the priciples behind Z". This understanding should be built up over the semester and is greatly assisted by sleep and a full belly.

Not answering questions. I have spoken to people after exams that have said stuff along the lines of "I didn't know the answer so I left it blank". WHAT!! Its not a gameshow. You don't loose points for making wrong guess. Why you wouldn't try is beyond me. Write something random. I have heard many stories of markers giving marks (only partial of course) to answers that are wrong but meaningful. For instance if a phrase can have two meanings, and one is clearly in the context of the exam but you have no idea what it means, answer the question using the other meaning.

And finally PENS!!! I am often told I am crazy because I walk into an exam with a fist full of pens. In nearly all of my exams I have only ever used one. At serveral exams people have borrowed pens from me at the last minute so it is handy to have some extras. My obsession paid off the other day in a writting exam where I ended up using 5 different pens because they all hated me and decided to not work. For the extra effort it is great insurance.

Sorry to be so boring but it's just that time of the year.

Have fun.

Challenges for New Zealand

Other than the bulk distance and big hills I want some specific challenges for New Zealand.

So far I have these on the todo list:
  • Highest sealed road (1080m)

  • Western most point of the North Island (Cape Egmont)

  • Southern most point of the South Island (Slope Point)

  • Eastern most point of the North Island (Eastern Cape)

  • Northern most point of the North Island (Cape Reigna)

  • Steepest street in the world (Baldwin st, Dunedin)

  • I also plan on taking a lot of photos of signs and stuff. I plan to try to get a photo of a sign for every person I know, whether it be their name or some major part of their life or an in joke. I will try to not cheat by getting a photo of a Griffith sign (this could whipe out about 1/3 of the challenge in a single click).

Can anyone else think of any challenges?

I have also put up the rest of the maps so *all* the links on that table should work now. I am slowly fixing up the maps a bit and making them line up with my accomodation plans.

Any other constructive comments about my trip are more than welcome...

I think I should have lunch and get ready for my exams now.

    Have fun.

Details for my New Zealand trip

Well I have been busy planning my heart out.

HERE is a whole bunch of info about where I am on what days. There is links to maps that you can even download and look at in Google Earth. The links only work up to day 39 at the moment because I am still finalising the rest of the maps.

There is a section missing which Adam is hopefully working on that will be another 450km or so. The total climb and descent is slightly out but it isnt too bad. That being said I am riding to the summit of Mt Everest 5.5 times in 60 days :P.

Looks like fun hey? I can't wait to be riding along the roads rather then drawing a little red line along them.

    Have fun.

    News update!

A few things have been happening recently... here's a run down.

Today I caught up with Glen for the first time in ages. We didn't get much time to chat because I was running behind but I hope to make it down there on Saturday.

I went to the new Ikea today to kill time waiting for Andrea to get home from work. Not bad... just wish I was out of home and earning money so I could buy stuff.

Today I also finally got my 4Gig cards for my holiday adventure. I bought 2 4Gig cards to go with my 2 2Gig cards. This makes me the happy chappy that can now take 2700 photos with his shiny 10mp camera :P.

I went and saw Andrea's house. It was the first time I have been there since the frame went up. It's getting there slowly. The other day I got a haircut for the first time in 8 years. We met the son of the lady who is moving in next door. She sounds nice and her son was very polite (even if he did have a crap ringtone on his phone).

My final treat for today was Mrs Ashmore's shepards pie. IT WAS YUMM!!! If you ever get invited to the Ashmore's for dinner the answer is either "yes" or "I can't make it, maybe you should invite Ed instead".

I have also done some more maps for my trip.

    Day 8
    Day 9
    Day 10
    Day 11
    Day 12
    Day 13
    Day 14

Hope that satisfies your blog reading hunger for a while. I plan to have some more maps done by this time tommorow.

    Have fun.

    Week 1

Well now that all I have to do is "study" for exams I decided to get more organised for New Zealand as an excuse to not study.

I have bought two more books called "pedallers paradise". One for each island. They are small books that are cheap and dont have all the waffle that the lonely planet one has. They have routes and info about towns. These books combined with other people's blogs and general google'd info is giving me enough to start being organised.

So far I have done proper maps of the first week.

    Day 1
    Day 2
    Day 3
    Day 4
    Day 5
    Day 6
    Day 7

If you have google earth you can download the .gpx files from those links and look at it in google earth :P

The reason the first day is soo short (before adam complains again) is that I land at 3:30pm and have to reassemble my bike and get myself sorted.

These plans are flexible, it will all come down to how i feel on each day.

If anyone is bored and wants to research accomodation along the route or fun things for me to do go for it. If you have rellies in NZ now is the time to let me know :P

    More to come shortly.

    Have fun.
